As more anglers obtain and understand how to use the new sonar technology, big bass are getting easier to target in the winter, he said. The Wildlife Department stocked the Florida-strain bass in Grand Lake, arguably the state's most important bass fishery, in the '80s and '90s without any success. But the Floridas, as a general rule, never have did very well in northeastern Oklahoma lakes. Other lakes get stocked every other year or every few years. That's why designated trophy lakes such as Broken Bow, Sardis, McGee Creek, Arbuckle and Murray get stocked with Florida genes each year. Fry and fingerlings are stocked in lakes across the state, mostly below I-40, where the Wildlife Department gets its biggest bang for their buck.įlorida bass have adapted better to the warmer climate and longer growing season in the lakes in southern Oklahoma. The Florida-strain bass, which grow bigger and faster, are raised in ponds by the Wildlife Department at the Durant Fish Hatchery.
